The Association of French archivists launched a petition
The Association of French archivists launched a petition. Why ?
For two years, France is conducting a general review of public policies (Révision Générale des Politiques Publiques), more famous here as « RGPP », with the aim of modernizing the state administration (make better) and saving money (make cheaper).
In this framework, the ministry of Culture is revising its organisation focusing on its main missions, what will lead to reduce the number of directorates of the Central Administration from 10 to 4 or 5.
The Directorate of the Archives of France (Direction des Archives de France, or DAF, as the French archivists say) belongs to the Ministry of Culture. It’s a supervisory authority for the National Archives and local authority archive services. It will become integrated with others in a Directorate of the Heritage (Direction du patrimoine).
It’s a pity for a certain number of French archivists. They think archival function needs to be easily identified in the state administration and needs to be managed at a high decision level. What’s more, this reform will lead to reduce the archives at only one dimension (heritage), leaving records management behind.
Please, excuse my bad English !
